I just noticed my SP3 with Windows 10 (via docking station connection) was not recognizing my Samsung 4K Monitor again. This has happened before when updates or drivers get pushed out either for the systems or the docking station. So I did my usual routine of re-installing the Samsung drivers AGAIN, only this time it is having no effect. It continues to list as Generic PnP Monitor and won't let me increase resolution beyond default for Surface tablet even though I have the external monitor only selected for display. I checked Samsung's support site and they have no new drivers. These worked well before. This driver reinstall recognized the monitor fine and connection type (Displayport) and installed successfully. Win10 will not however recognize it now still, even after a reboot.
KB4056254 - Successful
KB4023057 - Failed (1st attempt it appears)
KB4023057 - Successful--appears to have a driver registry fix tool - likely candidate for problem I would think based on my problems now with unrecognized HW. I checked my update history and this update has been installed 8 times over the last 3 months! Many successful, as many failed?! Correspondingly each time I have had to troubleshoot and fix broken devices!
I removed the 1709 update a few months ago due to inhereted performance problems that came with it. However, since then I have had 'programs stuck in install process' - 1709 keeps reporting as needing a restart to finish installing even though I backed it out.
Currently I am on Version 1703 (OS Build 15063.909)
I found this old article below but am wondering why I need to go through this effort potentially or if it will have any effect now? It sounds like every time you get new updates you have to re-run this exercise but I'm wondering if it will have any affect on updated device management that has done it's damage already and can't be reversed. At least that has been my experience with some device updates. Removing them doesn't necessarily undo device driver changes or for certain the firmware updates that are also breaking things. I noticed I am also back to sleep login default issues again I had solved a month ago (very painfully and time consuming I might add) when updates had been pushed out for the docking station.

Microsoft: Please, please, PLEASE STOP updating devices or drivers with your updates or at least give us that option to control those separately if we are for some reason experiencing new issues that require attention. Security updates, Your application bug fixes - fine, but leave my perfectly functioning system devices alone!!! At least until you understand what 'quality' really means.
Luckily timing was right that I had just completed a system image backup later yesterday. Might be the easiest way to repair. I've spent as much time investigating what was pushed out, attempting usual fixes to no effect now and now trying to figure out how to back it out again. Guess I might need to start doing restores monthly now too. And yes, the 30 day 'quality' update suspension has been turned back on.
Anyone found a hack to prevent system access for windows update connections through firewalls, etc in the meantime until we can get control back of our own systems???
So shortly after purchasing my surface book in February, I purchased a Samsung U28E590D 4K monitor which by the way was listed by Microsoft as being 4K compatible with the book. Everything worked fine until the Microsoft Updates rolled out in April. From that point until today the best resolution I could get on the monitor was 1980 X 1080.
Several on line sessions and calls passed over the spring and summer with no resolve. The final recommendation was to bring everything to a Microsoft Store and let a tech try things out. I did so today and after the tech did just the basic of testing, they concluded that the issue had to be with monitor. Rather than listing all the component swap out testing done, I'd rather get the solution. But note that from the beginning, I had been connecting to monitor's HDMI cable using the Microsoft Mini DisplayPort HD AV Adaptor.
While I disagreed with their conclusion I did think it could be a compatibility issue resulting from the MS updates. They had a Dell 4k monitor in stock and I decided to purchase one, but I want them to test it first. So the tech brought it out and set it up.
At first he simply connected the monitor using one of the store's HDMI cables and adaptors. The result was no signal to the monitor. He then tried the cable which came the monitor (which is a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable) and the monitor displayed in 4K resolution.

To his credit, the tech got the idea of connecting the Dell cable to my Samsung Monitor. Suddenly my Samsung monitor was displaying in 4K! I purchased a Belkin cable and left the Dell monitor at the Microsoft Store.

To another point, I remember being told that the docking station was needed to display 4K monitors. I am writing this post with the display cable simply plugged into the display port on the book.
